The Tennessee State Society dedicated a marker at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Vonore, Tennessee, on Saturday, September 16, 2023. The event was attended by national and state DAC officers and members, and members of the church congregation.
The marker reads: "St. Paul's was organized in Monroe County TN in 1817 by early settlers of German, French, and Swiss ancestry. In 1820 the church became one of the 18 Tennessee congregations to form the Evangelical German Lutheran Tennessee Synod. The congregation petitioned the state legislature for land and a German speaking pastor. In 1825 the State of Tennessee granted in trust to the Lutheran Society four acres of land in the Hiwassee District. The first building and pews were of logs, the roof of cedar shingles and a floor of dirt. The present church was dedicated in 1920.
